Benzalkonium chloride (BAC) is an organic salt that is used as a disinfectant and preservative in many products. It is also known as alkyldimethylbenzylammonium chloride and by the trade name Zephiran. BAC is effective against a wide range of bacteria, viruses, and fungi. It is the most commonly used antimicrobial preservative. It was initially used in hard contact lens solutions but is now ubiquitous. It can be found in most topical multi-use ophthalmic preparations.
