Applications
Thionyl chloride is mainly used in the industrial production of organochlorine compounds, which are often intermediates in pharmaceuticals and agrichemicals.
Description
Thionyl Chloride is a colorless to pale yellow or red liquid with a pungent odor. It is used as a chlorinating agent in the manufacture of organic compounds, as a solvent in Lithium batteries, and in making pesticides.
Preparation
Process for the preparation of thionyl chloride which comprises reacting sulfur dioxide and carbon tetrachloride at a temperature of 140 to 200 C. and a pressure of fifteen to two hundred atmospheres in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts metal halide catalyst and recovering the thionyl chloride.
Chemical Properties
Thionyl chloride is a reactive, colorless liquid with a pungent odor, commonly used as a reagent in organic synthesis due to its ability to convert carboxylic acids to acid chlorides and alcohols to alkyl chlorides.
Definition
Thionyl chloride is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula SOCl2, known for its reactivity in various chemical reactions and its application as a chlorinating and dehydrating agent.
