Application

Polyphosphoric acid can be used in the manufacture of special supported catalysts, e. g. for use in the production of cumene from benzene. Polyphosphoric acid can be used in the descaling and brightening of metal surfaces. Polyphosphoric acid is suitable for the drying of gas streams.

Description

POLYPHOSPHORIC ACID reacts exothermically with chemical bases (examples: amines, amides, inorganic hydroxides). The reactions can generate large amounts of heat in small spaces. Reacts with or corrodes active metals, including such structural metals as aluminum and iron, to release hydrogen, a flammable gas.

Preparation

Polyphosphoric acid is made by dehydrating and polymerizing technical or food grade phosphoric acid, for example, in a packed column or by absorbing P 2O 5 vapors in a recirculating phosphoric acid stream.

Chemical Properties

Polyphosphoric acid is a highly concentrated and viscous liquid consisting of linear or cyclic phosphoric acid polymers, often used as a powerful dehydrating and condensing agent in chemical reactions.

Definition

Polyphosphoric acid is an inorganic acid composed of multiple phosphoric acid units linked together, exhibiting strong acidic and dehydrating properties.
