Polysorbate 40 is a nonionic surfactant and emulsifier commonly used in cosmetics, personal care products, and pharmaceutical formulations. It is produced by the ethoxylation of sorbitan monopalmitate, which is derived from sorbitol and palmitic acid.
Polysorbate 40 is mainly used to help mix oil and water ingredients, stabilize emulsions, and solubilize fragrances or essential oils in water-based formulations. Because it is mild and compatible with many cosmetic ingredients, it is widely used in creams, lotions, cleansers, and makeup products.
